Back to basics!

We’ve all grown up being told that we need to eat at least 5 portions of fruit and veg each day, but a 2019 study found that only 27% of adults achieve this recommendation.

The 5 a day campaign is based on advice from the World Health Organisation (WHO), which recommends eating a minimum of 400g of fruit and vegetables a day to lower the risk of serious health problems such as heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer.

However, eating your 5 a day also provides several other benefits such as:

  • Giving you a natural mood boost
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Boosts gut microbiome diversity
  • Gives you an energy boost
  • Improves skin texture and elasticity

As they are usually low in fat and calories, they can help you to maintain a healthy weight and keep your heart healthy.

So, this challenge is all about going back to basics.

The challenge

For the next 31 days, we’re challenging you to eat a minimum of 5 portions of fruit and veg each day. An adult portion of fruit or vegetables is 80g, so your daily total should be no less than 400g, and we’ve got some tips to help you achieve this!

  • Add salad to your lunchtime sandwich
  • Top your morning porridge with some berries
  • Cook meals with a high veg content such as stir-fries
  • Add vegetables to pasta sauces or include a side salad with your main meal
  • Have a portion of fruit as a snack.

You can also gain further inspiration from the British Heart Foundation.

Encourage your employees!

To help everyone stay on track, why not take turns bringing in some fruit to share around the office? If you have an onsite cafeteria, motivate your peers to get a serving of fruit or veg with their lunch each day.

Another easy way to encourage healthy eating is to clear out the infamous office snack drawer and replace the items with fresh or dried fruits and veggies – you’ll still get an afternoon sugar hit but it will be from natural sources!
