What are the physical activity guidelines?
The physical activity guidelines are determined by the Chief Medical Officers in the UK and advises adults on the amount and the type of physical activity that they should be doing to improve their health.

How much exercise should be done per week?
It is recommended that adults in the UK conduct a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week. This equates to roughly 20 minutes of exercise per-day. This is only a guideline and the more exercise you get, the healthier you will become.
What are the benefits of physical activity?
Being physically active on a regular basis may:
- reduce your risk of a heart attack
- manage your weight better
- have a lower blood cholesterol level
- lower the risk of type 2 diabetes and some cancers
- have lower blood pressure
- have stronger bones, muscles and joints and lower risk of developing osteoporosis
- lower your risk of falls
- recover better from periods of hospitalisation or bed rest
- feel better – with more energy, a better mood, feel more relaxed and sleep better
