With an ever growing number of swine flu cases in the UK, the Department of Health has produced a very useful document providing advice for business in dealing with this situation in the workplace. It is anticipated that the first wave of swine flu will happen between August and November with around 30 per cent of the public predicted to be infected. During the peak weeks employee absence rates for illness (themselves or looking after ill children) may reach 12% of the workforce – this is in addition to normal holiday absence.

Updated Sickness Statistics
The latest sickness absence figures have been released highlighting yet again the clear difference between private and public sector organisations.
In the private sector, the average number of sickness days (per employee, per year) was 7.2, whereas the public sector statistics revealed an annual average of 9.8 days per employee. Recent research has also highlighted that over half of UK companies do not even measure sickness absence levels despite this being a key reason for reducing business performance.
